Why Do We Do Theatre?
The Castillo Theatre is part of the All Stars Project, whose bottom line commitment is to helping people develop, so that our country and world can develop. Ever since Castillo and the All Stars hooked up in the mid-1990s there been people, including donors, who, on and off, have questioned why the All Stars and its youth programs have a progressive political theatre as part of the mix. They question what relationship it has to development. Here is my response.
Why do we do theatre?
Because we like to play
Because we like to imagine
Because we like to be heard
Because we like to be seen
Because we like getting a lot of people together
It’s gratifying to see people gather to laugh and groan and gasp
To cheer and cough and cry
It’s a wonderful thing to be appreciated
It’s a wonderful thing to learn appreciation
To appreciate each other and what we created together
To appreciate the creating and to appreciate the being together.
Why do we do theatre?
Because it’s fun
Creating our ensemble, our play, our production
Because it’s fun
Sharing with our families, our friends, our co-workers, our community.
Something that’s about us
Something that’s not about us,
In fact, something that’s not very much like us at all
Something that’s familiar and, at the same time, something strange
Like a dream, like a fantasy, like a hope, like a sigh
Something that’s strange and, at the same time, something attractive,
Like a smile, like a song, like a naked body, like the roar of traffic
Something that’s attractive, and at the same time something challenging
Something that’s challenging, annoying, frustrating, infuriating, celebratory and sad.
Because it’s fun to be weird together.
Because it’s fun to create together.
Why do we do theatre?
Because we like to learn and we like to work hard
Because we like learning to devise plays and write scripts
Because we like the hard work of memorizing lines and blocking,
We like the effort of projecting our voices and moving with grace
Because we like learning to make costumes
Build sets
Hang lights
Program sound boards
Sell tickets
Usher people to their seats
Hand out programs
Direct audience members to the rest rooms
Because it interesting to hear people’s comments
At intermission and after the play
Their praise or bafflement, their curiosities and complaints
Because it’s interesting to talk about the plays for weeks, even years, afterwards.
Why do we do theatre?
To see our lives through a different lens
To struggle with our collective demons
To grope our way out of the traps
To love our way out of the hate
To sing our way out of the silence
To dance our way out of stagnation
To learn about our histories
To imagine possible futures
Why do we do theatre?
Because it’s magical to become someone else
And by being someone else
To discover who we’re becoming.
Why do we do theatre?
Because we like being connected
To each other
To the script
To the set
To the costumes
To the lighting design
To the audience
To our community
Why do we do theatre?
Because doing theatre
Is building community
And building community creates growth and development
And growth and development creates power
And power is beautiful.
Why do we do theatre?
Because it’s powerful.

El Castillo Theatre es parte del Proyecto All Stars, cuyo compromiso base es ayudar a las personas a desarrollarse, para que nuestro país (USA) y el mundo puedan desarrollarse. Desde que Castillo y All Stars se unieron, a mitad de los años noventa, han habido personas, incluidos donantes, quienes, de vez en cuando, han preguntado por qué All Stars y sus programas juveniles tienen un teatro político como parte de la mezcla. Cuestionan la relación que esto tiene con desarrollarse. Esta es mi respuesta.
¿Por qué hacemos teatro?
Porque nos gusta jugar
Porque nos gusta imaginar
Porque nos gusta ser escuchadxs
Porque nos gusta ser vistxs
Porque nos gusta hacer que muchas personas se junten
Es gratificante ver a la gente juntarse para reír y gruñir y asombrarse
Para vitorear y toser y llorar
Es algo maravilloso ser apreciadx
Es algo maravilloso aprender apreciación
Apreciarnos entre todxs y lo que creamos juntxs
Apreciar la creación y apreciar el estar juntxs.
¿Por qué hacemos Teatro?
Porque es divertido
Crear nuestro elenco, nuestra obra, nuestra producción
Porque es divertido
Compartir con nuestras familias, nuestrxs amigxs, nuestrxs compañerxs de trabajo, nuestra comunidad.
Algo que es sobre nosotrxs
Algo que no es sobre nosotrxs
Es más, algo que no es como nosotrxs para nada
Algo que es familiar y, al mismo tiempo, extraño
Como un sueño, como una fantasía, como una esperanza, como un suspiro
Algo que es extraño y, al mismo tiempo, algo atractivo,
Como una sonrisa, como una canción, como un cuerpx desnudx, como el rugir del tráfico
Algo que es atractivo, y al mismo tiempo es algo retador
Algo que es retador, molesto, frustrante, enfurecedor, celebratorio y triste.
Porque es divertido ser rarxs juntxs
Porque es divertido crear juntxs.
¿Por qué hacemos Teatro?
Porque nos gusta aprender y nos gusta trabajar duro
Porque nos gusta aprender a inventar obras y escribir guiones
Porque nos gusta el trabajo duro de memorizar los textos y marcar el espacio,
Nos gusta el esfuerzo de proyectar nuestras voces y movernos con gracia
Porque nos gusta aprender a hacer vestuarios
Construir escenarios
Colgar luces
Programar consolas de sonido
Vender entradas
Acompañar a la gente a sus asientos
Entregar los programas
Dirigir al público a los baños
Porque es interesante oír los comentarios de la gente
En el intermedio y después de la obra
Su alabanza o desconcierto, sus curiosidades o quejas
Porque es interesante hablar de las obras por semanas, hasta años, después.
¿Por qué hacemos Teatro?
Para ver nuestras vidas con lentes diferentes
Para luchar contra nuestros demonios colectivos
Para ir saliendo a tientas de las trampas
Para salir amando fuera del odio
Para cantar nuestro camino fuera del silencio
Para bailar nuestra salida del estancamiento
Para aprender de nuestras historias
Para imaginar futuros posibles
¿Por qué hacemos Teatro?
Porque es mágico convertirse en otra persona
Y es siendo otra persona
Que descubrimos en quien nos estamos convirtiendo.
