Attention

Uninvited

The phone rings

The world falls away

Attention must be paid.

Body tense, I resist.

I let it squawk.

Were I to rush to the alarmed little machine

And place it to my ear

Most likely

Another machine would snap to attention

At the other end

(Is it an end?)

A recorded voice would drone

A very important offer

From Whatever Incorporated

To buy a wonderfully weird widget.

I don’t need another need.

I have enough already.

I bring my attention to the window

Outside

Spring has brought baby green to the trees.

That’s enough for now.
